Any grilled sandwich is a panini (panino), you just need bread, fillings and a grill or grill pan! The varieties are limited only to your creativity.
You can make sweet or savory panini. What are the secrets to the perfect panini?
- The bread is the centerpiece of an excellent panini. Brush or spray the bread (not the Panini press/pan) with olive oil prior to grilling. Breads should have a flat top ( if using a round top roll or baguette turn the round top over so the flat surface will connect with the grill).
- Add a spread on the bread such as pesto (see our pesto email) or a jam (see our jam email) prior to adding the filling.
- Think less is more with the filling. This is not a hero sandwich, a few slices of meat, cheese, grilled veggies etc. Any "wet" ingredients such as tomatoes should be put in the middle of the filling. Anything you want to stay crisp such as lettuce or herbs – insert after the grilling. A delicious cheese with a sweet or savory jam will make an excellent combination.
- The perfect sweet Panini? Nutella spread between 2 slices of wonderful bread. Simple but perfectly heaven. Add thin slices of banana to send it over the top.
